Successful Learning - Drive and Determination for Life
It is our highest goal to take the children and teens entrusted into our care, and raise them into independent young adults who are healthy, content and successfully coexist in society.
We live in a time of fast and increasingly unpredictable changes. The world is seeing a veritable explosion of knowledge and information. Educational and Professional backgrounds are becoming more and more branched out and complex. The youth is being offered more possibilities, but navigating through everything is therefore all the more difficult.
Traditional teaching methods are hardly enough anymore. What we want, is to impart the abilities to successfully deal with any situation. Therefore, our approach, which we developed in conjunction with Professor Frank Brückel (expert for educational innovations and school development of the teacher's college in Zürich) encompasses the following four objectives:
- To acquire knowledge and competence
- To have the ability for continuous learning throughout life
- To develop self-awareness and a sense of responsibility
- To acquire key qualifications
In addition to our intensive academic advancement program, we want our students to discover the joy and necessity of continuous learning, throughout life, even after their graduation. We support this with a special program designed for learning method competence (for test preparation, doing homework, and presentation of papers or reports).
For us, the strength of an individual lies in taking responsibility, first for themselves and their own actions, but then also for the other members of the community. There are plenty of opportunities for this, e.g. as a group/ school representative, or by leading an extracurricular or remedial course.
Central to the key qualifications is not only personal competence (among other things in how they deal with time, money, orderliness, and cleanliness), but also interpersonal skills (communication skills, conflict resolution skills, etc.).
We ourselves model what behavior we expect of our students -- by treating them with respect and showing them we are aware that we have much to learn from each other.
More than other boarding school, we put an emphasis on personal modesty and simplicity in lifestyle. We do not wish to be elite, but rather be open to anybody who might come from a different academic background or social circle. To this purpose, we deliberately put students from different school tracks together in one house. This is also the reason our students attend the public schools and interact with the local school children.
Finally, we place an emphasis on actively approaching one's own future professional life. Our students should learn to set goals for themselves and seize professional opportunities that come their way. Together with these schools, we offer them activities and presentations that range widely from informative, grounding, and practical to the more complex. Additionally, we take advantage of the professional support available to us through the Academic Advisement or the Career Center of the Universities of Kiel and Flensburg.
